Some friends of mine over at starflight3.org have been hanging around there for more than 16 years…that is right…in 1997 the starflight 3 project was announced and changed hands more than you have bones in your body. Rather unfortunate because even years after its announcement it had a large following of eager Starflight fans. Why am I mentioning Starflight? Well this project originally came about because I was of the view that Starflight 3 should just be an enhanced 2d project. But if the current project members can deliver 3d that is fine by me, they certainly have the passion for it.
Therefore since then I have been planning on paper this game Void of Darkness (VOD). From inception I have decided that it would be heavily influenced by Starflight 1 & 2. They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, however, VOD will not be a strict ‘copy’ per se. But rather will (hopefully) have the same elements in it that made Starflight so magical to many people, plus my own additions as a sincere fan of all space games of any category, fighter based or capital ship based.
This means that VOD will focus on key areas of
exploration
alien interaction
story
adventure
trading
And will do so with direct homage to Starflight in many areas. Exploration will deliver the feeling of small ship big universe, alien interaction will see unique aliens, story will be space opera type without melodrama, adventure will be key, and trading will be there.
The focus will be on functionality and gameplay rather than super awesome graphics. That being said, my own spin of tactical space combat will be implemented, so the combat will be a very enhanced version compared to the original Starflight, which although fun, would not work for a spiritual successor.
So VOD is a spiritual successor, it isn’t Starflight, but is heavily influenced, and pays homage to Starflight, and that isn’t a bad thing if you are a fan.
