Hey Justin—
I just stumbled upon VoD last week and bought the game tonight. Cards on the table: I was looking for something to fill the void in my heard that Escape Velocity left years ago. I will try to keep my bias towards that series influence any feedback I give. No promises.
First off, this game has such exceptional promise! Take everything I say with that specific grain of salt, because I wouldn't be here on this forum if I didn't already drink the Kool-Aid. I'm in for the long haul; that's why I want to make it perfect.
Secondly, I haven't found a list of not-implemented-yet features. I'm sure one exists somewhere, but I haven't seen it yet. Some of the stuff I bitch about might be coming. If that's the case, I apologize.
Saving:
The first time I save my game after launching the game, I am able to name my gamesave. Once I save a single time, the text field for the save name is replaced with uneditable text saying "Save Successful!" or something similar. I can overwrite the name of a previous save and it works successfully, but I am unable to 'stripe' save names—or have a solid trust that my save actually worked.
Inventory:
When upgrading/downgrading my ship, my affected items simply disappear rather than being taken off the ship and placed into my cargo bay. If this is intentional (or unavoidable for the time being), I can see it making more sense if these items are purchased and fitted simultaneously at the shipyard—more like you are buying a one-time upgrade 'service' rather than an item to own.
Windows Open/Close:
The windows that are opening by the NavBar on the left don't normally seem to close by clicking on them a second time. Some do (universe map), but most do not (cargo). I believe there is only a single instance of each of these windows (meaning you can't have 3 cargo windows open), so I don't see a downside to making a second click close the currently-open windows.
Shortcut Keys:
I'm sure they exist, but I'm not sure where to find them! I expected "i" to open inventory, "m" to open the map, and a number of others, but they don't seem to be working as I imagined.
Weapon Groups:
In the tutorial, it mentions that firing all weapons is possible via Mouse1, but I couldn't find how to set up weapon firing groups or fire the individually. I imagined this would be done in the Engineering panel, but I didn't find anything there or in Settings.
That's it for now. I played less than an hour, so I apologize if I missed anything blatant. As I play more, I will try to get additional details/screenshots when things come up, but I wanted to braindump this before bed tonight.
Thanks for making a great game. I look forward to following it for a loooong time!
