Hey guys, thought I would tell you a little about the crew system of VOD. Not only will you manage ship systems in the game but you will also manage your crew to some extent. Now your crew will not require ‘hand holding’ but when you are selecting your crew during the game, you can decide what stations to assign them to and they will grant bonuses based on their skill.
So a crewman with high skill in navigation for example will grant you a bonus to speed/maneuverability. A crewman with high weapon skills will grant bonuses to tactical operations…
Your crew automatically repairs your ship, you can if you wish give them various priorities for different systems, I mentioned this before. But they will go about their ‘tasks’ independent of interference from you.
Away missions: you will be able to deploy selected crew members to planets to do expeditions, once on the planet you can order them to do various things, mine, explore etc.
I mentioned previously that I favor simulation elements and that VOD will be more of that nature when it comes to these systems. This means that each of your crew men is a living ‘being’. They get tired, they need to eat and they can die. If you leave them on a planet without food, they will starve. If you go on a long journey and run out of food aboard your ship they will starve.
When they are hungry they go to the galley and eat. When they are tired they will rest. If you have no crew aboard your ship, or they all die for some reason, then do not expect to be able to repair your ship or control it properly. While you as the Captain can ‘take control’ of the helm and still ‘fly’ it, do not expect to be able to fire weapons, fly the ship etc etc.
The player controls the ship directly, but this is because you have crew aboard, so your input are like ‘orders’ to your crew, which clarifies the above, so if they are dead, you can still fly, but suppose you tried to fire a weapon, that ‘order’ you are sending to your crew won’t take effect because they are dead. So please bury them accordingly.
This system is intended for you to come to care about your crew, and since you cannot save anywhere any time, if you go off on a long journey, and get ambushed, and poor Johnny the navigator dies, then Johnny is gone. Unless you name another crew member Johnny.
This system is not intended to frustrate you. But to add an element of tension, that you must survive, until you return to a safe haven where you can save. Which will be at any space station you encounter. Also you will have abilities which will make it difficult to kill you right off the bat, so if you get ambushed it isn’t all doom and gloom. This is tied to items you find in the game, which gives you a reason to explore, and a reason to stay close to home until you find certain items which will make exploring safer.
Thanks for reading!
I am going to put all posts on the forums for easier selection of older topics.
